Obituary for Sanford R. Smith Jr.
Sanford R. Smith, Jr., 82, of Centre Twp., died Friday, July 15, 2016 in his residence. He was the husband of Jean M. (Stasulli) Smith. They were married August 20, 1955 and celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Born in Shoemakersville, he was the son of the late Sanford T., Sr., and Elphina (Koller) Smith. He graduated from Millersville University in 1975 with a BS in Education. He was a member of Salem (Belleman’s) Church, Centre Twp. He was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean War. Sanford worked as an industrial arts teacher at Kutztown Area School District for 19 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of Central Berks Fire Company, and Shoemakersville Fire Company. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He was a dog-lover and he was very patriotic.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a son: Bradley S. husband of Melissa A. (Gilman) Smith, Batavia, OH; a daughter: Linette A. (Smith) wife of James M. Baer, Mohrsville; four grandchildren: Jessica M. Smith, Bradley S. Smith, II, Erika E. (Baer) wife of Matthew Watson, and Leah J. Baer. He is also survived by three sisters: Betty (Smith) Dower, Dauberville, Helen (Smith) Driesbach, Shoemakersville, and Lura (Smith) Pearson, Shoemakersville. He was predeceased by a brother: Elmer Smith.
Services will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 10:00 AM from Salem (Belleman’s) Church, 3540 Belleman’s Church Rd. Mohrsville, PA 19541. Burial will follow in Berks County Memorial Gardens. Viewings will be held Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street Leesport, PA 19533 and Wednesday from 9:00 to 10:00 am in the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to: Salem (Belleman’s) Church Endowment Fund at the above address or Animal Rescue League of Berks County P.O. Box 69 Mohnton, PA 19540.
