Obituary for Dorothy A. Mengel (Bubbenmoyer)

Dorothy A. (Bubbenmoyer) Mengel, 88, of Conowingo, MD, where she resided with her son, and formerly of Edenburg, Windsor Twp., entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday, September 24, 2016 in Forest Hill Health and Rehabiliation Center, Forest Hill, MD. She was the wife of Arlan C. Mengel, died November 4, 2013.
Born in Tilden Twp. on February 23, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Mahlon F. and Bertha S. (Stine) Bubbenmoyer. She was one of 10 children.
Dorothy, like her brothers and sisters, worked many jobs as a child for several local farmers working in the fields or doing farm work or house work helping to earn money for the entire family. She met the love of her life at the Hershey’s Orchards in Windsor Township, and at the age of 16 married Arlan C. Mengel, who had just turned 21. They purchased the family home in Edenburg in 1950 which was a mere shell and made it into a home for themselves and their son. She wasn’t afraid of work or attempting anything and worked hand in hand with her husband as they remodeled and fixed up their home. After retirement, she even helped her husband put new siding on the exterior of their home. Dorothy worked at the Hamburg Center when it was a TB Sanitorium, and later worked for Lenhart Manufacturing Company, which was a wire factory for harnesses and wiring for vehicles. She then went to work as a seamstress for several underwear factories, and later returned to the Hamburg Center working in the custodial position. Dorothy and her husband retired in 1988. She and her husband and son made many pounds of Easter egg candies each year for sale. She loved to cook and bake. The family, and her grandchildren, worked many years at the Kutztown Folk Festival for Zion’s United Church of Christ, serving family style dinners. Dorothy was active in her church, volunteering her time as needed. She loved to bake her shoofly pies and fastnachts. Dorothy and Arlan had acreage out behind their home in which they did truck farming. Anything they could not sell had to be canned or frozen. Having grown up during the depression, nothing was allowed to be wasted. Dorothy was confirmed with the Lutheran Congregation of St. Michael’s Church in Tilden Township and later joined the Reformed congregation at Zion’s United Church of Christ in Windsor Township after her marriage where she remained a member until her death. She was a member of the OIA of Hamburg and the Shartlesville Fire Company social quarters at one time. Dorothy and her husband enjoyed traveling after their retirement, loved to attend local Auctions, and play cards with friends.
Dorothy is survived by a son: Stanley A. Mengel, Conowingo, Maryland; three grandchildren: Daniel R. Mengel, husband of Jenny (Bowman), Newark, DE, Shaun E. Mengel, husband of Dana (Kinder), Abingdon, MD, and Tina M. (Mengel), wife of Patrick Chayer, Colora, Maryland; five great-grandchildren: Naomi E. Mengel, Kiersten A. Mengel, Lesley M. Mengel, Erica H. Mengel, Kevin M. Chayer; and two step great-grandchildren: Taylor Chayer and Alyssa Chayer. She is also survived by four brothers: William A. Bubbenmoyer, husband of Anna (Keim), Hamburg, Carl E. Bubbenmoyer, husband of Shirley (Turner), Edenburg, Wayne M. Bubbenmoyer, husband of Mary (Henson), Seaside, CA, Harold H. Bubbenmoyer of North Carolina; and a sister Elsie M. (Bubbenmoyer) Fox, widow of Elwood Fox, Hamburg. She is predeceased by two brothers: Howard F., and Charles R. Bubbenmoyer, and two sisters: Annie K. (Bubbenmoyer) Fidler and Mary J. (Bubbenmoyer) Kramer.
